Knowing About Herbs and Their Uses Will Provide Many Benefits

We are sometimes unaware of the benefits of herbs and of their uses. But with a little investigation, we are able to find their advantages in many forms.

Not the least of these benefits is how the flavors enhance our foods. Herbs, especially fresh herbs are the foundation for great seasoning in our meals. Excellent food can be prepared very simply and result in a masterpiece with the right herbal additions. "The fresher the better" is the key, but even dried herbs can add that extra bit of flavor that hits the taste buds in just the right way. Chefs the world over and since time began have understood the importance of adding herbs.

\"about Herbs\"

But, those chefs often knew the health benefits of herbs, as well. Our pharmaceutical industries began with herbal ways of treating illness. As far back as 400 BC the Greek physician Hippocrates was prescribing willow tree bark (rich in salicin) to relieve pain and fever. This is the same substance that, centuries later, chemist Felix Hoffmann synthesized into a stable powder to make aspirin for the Bayer Company. Many of our current synthetic drugs have their research roots firmly planted in ancient herbal remedies. And many of today's drugs are made with herbal foundations.

Many people prefer the herbal option over a synthetic alternative because of the organic nature of the remedy and the personal control that is available in a naturopathic environment. We are all bombarded with unhealthy products and questionable agricultural methods and pollutants. Our immune systems become fatigued. Homegrown herbs can help mitigate those attacks and restore some of the healthy balance that we crave. Our bodies can utilize some of the herbs as filters. It can enlist some of the herbs as transportation units to help expel unhealthy invaders in us. And herbs can ease some of the stresses that put such a burden on our already overstressed systems.

The therapeutic properties of medicinal plants are not only advantage obtained from a thorough study of herbology. One of the benefits, not often sited, in the herbal community is the sense of purpose, peace and accomplishment reached by the actual growing of our own herbs. Whether we have acres of land available to us for developing a full-scale herb farm or we only have a tiny spot by a window for a pot, growing our own herbs can supply us with a greater connection to our food.

The ultimate intended purposes of our plants will determine what we will grow and how much, but, as we begin to learn all of the possibilities available to us and we begin to have successes with our herb farming, we will figure out how to expand and enjoy growing plants that we will actually use.

Herbs are sometimes expensive to buy but easy and inexpensive to grow. Seeds or small plants can be found readily. Pots can be as expensive as an intricate hydroponic system or as cheap as an old cut up milk carton. The key is figuring out what we want to grow and learning the best way of growing it.

Whether we are looking for new ways to express ourselves in our cooking, looking for natural remedies or want to get back to the soil, herbs are an easy solution for our concerns. Their benefits far exceed the required investment. Herbs and their uses are a very valuable study. The more we learn the more we want to know. And the more we know, the more we benefit.
